The reserve is characterised by breathtaking rock formations and magnificent scenery that is unique to this part of Africa. Here you can find an exceptionally wide range of fauna and flora, some of which are classified highly endangered.

The close relationship between the Kagga Kamma Swartruggens and the Cedarberg is geologically visible in its typical reddish brown weathered sandstone formations, as well as its plant cover, which can be described as a drier mountain fynbos. It is largely treeless and is dominated by a variety of shrubs with interesting local names.

The area has a rich cultural heritage with Bushman/San rock paintings of up to 6000 years old scattered through the reserve. Bushmen re-settled on the reserve 12 years ago and today still lives off this land by selling their authentic handicraft to visitors.

On a clear day the trail offers you a magnificent view over the vast stretches of the Ceres-Karoo and the mountains and valleys of the Cedarberg. Look carefully and you will find some of the very rare reptiles and birds of this area. In certain areas you are sure to see some wild game, from the small steenbok to the largest Eland and cheeky baboon. If you are very lucky you might even see some caracal or mountain leopard.

From middle August to middle November you will normally find lots of flowers, a paradise for botanists and nature lovers. Summer months (December to the end of February) may be very hot with little or no shade. Winter months (June - August) may vary from mild to very cold with frost and even snow on high lying areas.

The off-road route is more than 100km long and it is best to travel with another vehicle. Normally you won’t do all the sections of the road and therefore one night’s visit is sufficient if you want to experience Kagga Kamma.

Visit their website www.kaggakamma.co.za for more info about the reserve.
